Supertrees, flowers, lights in Singapore – like in an Avatar movie

Gardens by the Bay is a surreal green oasis in the heart of Singapore that offers an easy getaway from the skyscrapers of the city. Here you are surrounded by nature while you feel like you stepped into an Avatar movie. The first time I visited Singapore was in 2010, then it didn’t exist yet. The second time in 2017 I was there with my mother and we felt the need to go there on one day. We went there in the afternoon because in the morning it was too hot and the humidity was very high and we wanted to see the garden illuminated.
This futuristic park is famous for its Supertree Grove – a collection of magical giant trees illuminated by night – as well as the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome – the world’s largest climate-controlled greenhouses and for the OCBC Skywalk.

Supertrees are 25 – 50 metres tall and they come alive with light and sound at night. These are no real trees, each supertree’s core is a steel frame and on it there are plants. There are more than 200 species: bromeliads, orchids, ferns and tropical flowers have been planted on the 18 Supertrees.

The OCBC Skyway is a 128-metre long walkway connecting two Supertrees at 22 meters. We arrived a bit late because we first visited the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest so we couldn’t go up there. But even from the ground it is spectacular.

The Flower Dome and Cloud Forest are two cooled conservatories. These are home for 220,000 plants from almost every continent in the world.

The Flower Dome is the largest glass greenhouse in the world, housing a collection of plants from deserts all over the world. There are different „gardens” here like Australian Garden, South African Garden, South American Garden, Californian Garden, Mediterranean Garden…etc.

While the Cloud Forest replicates the cool humid conditions found in tropical mountain regions between 1,000 meters  and 3,000 meters, found in South-East Asia, Middle-East and South America. You can go up to the Cloud Mountain by an elevator and then walk down on the Cloud Walk to the waterfall. There are orchids, ferns and tropical plants growing here. It consists of a number of levels like the The Lost World (carnivorous plants can be found here), The Crystal Mountain (huge stalactites), Treetop walk…etc.

The Garden Rhapsody is a light and sound show, it takes place every day at 19.45 and 20.45. The best place to see it is outside the Gardens. We were going home and we didn’t know the exact time when it would start, we just accidently saw and listened to it.
