In Hungarian/Magyarul – Ahh, a krétai Kék Lagúna (Blue Lagoon)
If something is called Blue Lagoon it always attracts people. There are many Blue Lagoons in the World, there is one too in Crete, Greece in Gramvoussa.
I know it because some years ago during my first season as a holiday representative I was guiding this excursion every week once from Rethymnon.
I was working in West Crete, based in Rethymnon, one of the most beautiful towns on this island. Passing by Chania, along the sea it was a scenic drive. It took a long time to go to Kissamos, from where our ship left, at least 1,5 hours.
By ship you go first to a small Island Gramvoussa, where you can go up to a castle (ruins of it) from the 16th century.
It is terribly tiring (more than 130 meters), especially in that heat in the summer, I went up there I think altogether 2 times, it was enough for me. From above the view over the bay and over the shipwreck is also fantastic.
After that we went by ship further to Balos, to the BLUE LAGOON. We usually stayed there for some hours. In the shallow turquoise blue water you can enjoy the sun shining on you, if you want to swim it is a bit windy but there are areas where you can do so. And simply don’t do anything just take pictures, collect shells, sunbathe…
After the free time at the Blue Lagoon our ship took us back to the harbour and then by bus we went back to our hotels.
This route is the usual one, what most of the tourists do if they are staying in the west and want to see the Blue Lagoon.
If you want something else there, have from a different point a beautiful view over the lagoon and be able to take such photos like in the postcards you have to go by car. Careful, the road is not an asphalt road, if you damage the lower part of your car you have to pay for it. That is why driving slowly can take an hour to get there.
After that a short walk to the lookout point.
If you have the strength you even can go (climb) down to the Lagoon. I didn’t have the mood, I had already been there before going there by car at least 20 times…
From the East you can go on this excursion if you spend a night in the West and be picked up from a hotel in the West, like my colleagues did it…
Anyway I got to know the whole island, and I can assure you this is one of the most beautiful parts of Crete.
